She decided at twelve. She has spent every year since arguing with what the word “dentist” makes people feel.

Dr. Spandana knew she wanted to be a dentist at twelve. She chose periodontology and implantology, specialties concerned with the foundation that holds teeth in place: the gums and bone. It is unglamorous, slow and largely invisible in photographs. It is also where many long-term dental problems begin, and where much can be prevented.

What she built at Dr. Spandana’s Dentistry, dental clinic in khajaguda, Hyderabad, organised around one decision: the appointment is not the treatment. The conversation before it is. Patients are told what is happening, why it is happening, what their options are and what each involves before treatment begins. Nothing is done before the patient understands it.

Four Principles that shape every appointment

Sometimes the tooth genuinely cannot be kept, and saying so early saves you money and discomfort. That usually means one of these:

Slow Dentistry

A first appointment here is a conversation, not a procedure. She examines, explains what she has found, shows you the images and gives you the options with what each one involves and what each one costs. Then you go home and think. Many dental decisions are not emergencies. When there is time to understand the diagnosis and options, patients should have that time.

Minimal intervention

Natural tooth structure cannot be replaced once it is removed. Every millimetre of healthy tooth removed is permanent. She will not open a tooth to see what is inside if there is a way to find out without opening it, and she will not replace a filling that is doing its job.

Total transparency

You are told the diagnosis, the cause, the options, the sequence and the cost in writing before treatment begins. If there are multiple clinically appropriate ways to treat something , you are informed about all of them, including the more conservative option.

Anxiety-free care

Anxiety is not something to be pushed through. If your heart rate is up and you are bracing, anaesthetic works less predictably and the memory the appointment leaves behind is worse. Time spent helping a patient feel safe is part of treatment, not time taken away from it.

On one occasion I found myself with excruciating pain in one of my molars.  Of course this just happen to occur on a Sunday... as all emergencies seem to.  It was my utmost fortune that one of my colleagues had just visited his Dentist which happens to be Dr Spandana.  There was no hesitation on her part and was willing to take me that same day on very short notice. Now, upon arrival I have to admit that I thought I was at the wrong location as the office was nothing like the normal sterile Dentist offices we have in the US.  Think of it as arriving at the front desk of a SPA where you are offered a separate personal area to sit with sofas and a library and tea or water. Dr Spandana quickly came in and it was evident right away that this was no normal dental practice as she was very engaging and informative and above all you could sense the passion in what she does and what she has built. After an informative discussion on what was to transpire I was lead into the dental room.  All this time I was feeling no stress whatsoever.  Which usually for me would have been an instant blood pressure spike... but not here. The procedure was done expertly, in no time and still my blood pressure was normal and anxiety levels were nill. I would definitely recommend Dr. Spandana's Dentistry for any and all dental needs.  I will also say that if you happen to be thinking of any major dental work in the future and the costs seem to be astronomical, I would encourage you to inquire about their Dental Vacation offerings which are just beginning to be finalized.

Will Dr. Spandana see me herself, or will I be passed to someone else?
