Dental Implants Over Bridges

Multiple options are available today to replace missing teeth. Fixed options are preferred over removable such as dental bridges and dental implants. Let us first begin by understanding what they are:

Dental Implants

An implant is a titanium screw that we fix in your jaw bone. It mimics the root portion of your tooth. After complete integration of the implant with your bone , an abutment is used to fix a cap on the implant which restores your missing tooth.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap that is created by a missing tooth by using the adjacent teeth on either side as support. We have to reduce the structure of your existing teeth on either side of the space created by the missing tooth, take support from them in order to replace the missing tooth.

What would a dentist recommend?

Obviously implants!

  • I wouldn’t want my natural healthy teeth to be reduced and capped in order to replace a missing tooth and hence I wouldn’t want that for my patients as well.
  • Also dental implants help in preserving the bone. Removing a tooth from the jaw bone will result in atrophy of the bone in that area. An implant helps to prevent that.
  • It obviously is a more permanent solution. If cared for properly implants can last a lifetime on the other hand a dental bridge can last upto 10 years.
  • There are also higher chances of the abutment teeth that have been used for support to develop cavities thereby compromising their health!
  • Last but not the least lets talk cost – replacing a single tooth with a good quality 3 unit bridge will cost you approximately the same as a single implant and crown.

Bridges are a common teeth replacement method, but the professional dental community has found dental implants to be the best long-term option in dentistry. If you’ve lost teeth, make an appointment to come into our clinic and discuss your options.
