Metal Braces Treatment in Hyderabad: Effective, Honest, and Often the Right Choice

The most proven option in orthodontics and for many cases, still the best. Here is what to expect, without the apology and without the upsell.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Metal braces are stainless steel brackets bonded to the front of your teeth, connected by an arch wire that is gradually adjusted to move teeth into place. They are visible, time-tested, and remain the most effective option for complex cases. Typical cost in Hyderabad: ₹25,000–₹45,000 per arch. Typical treatment duration: 12–24 months. Most cases finish in this range.

Why metal braces are not a “lesser” option ?

Somewhere in the last decade, clinic websites started apologising for metal braces. They got called “traditional,” “classic,” “entry-level”, in tones that quietly suggested the patient should be choosing something else. We want to push back on that.

Metal braces remain, in 2026, the most effective orthodontic option for many real-world cases. For severe crowding, significant rotations, deep bites, or complex multi-tooth movements, traditional braces will usually finish your treatment faster, with a better final result, than aligners can. They cost less because the underlying technology is simpler not because the outcome is worse.

If your case is complex, metal braces may not just be a reasonable option. They may be the option.

Who metal braces suit?

Metal braces are a strong fit for:
Complex Cases
Severe crowding, significant rotations, deep overbites, large gaps, crossbites, and cases where the orthodontist needs precise, sustained control over individual teeth.
Teenagers & Younger Adults
Many cases between ages 11 and 18 are treated most efficiently with metal braces, especially when the jaw is still developing.
Patients Who Want One Fixed Solution
If the idea of remembering to wear aligners 20–22 hours a day worries you, fixed braces remove the discipline question — they work whether you remember them or not.
Cost-Conscious Patients
Metal braces are the most economical of the proven options. The cost difference is real, and for many families it matters.
Patients Who Do Not Mind Visible Treatment
If you are comfortable being visibly in treatment for 12–24 months, there is no reason to pay for invisibility you do not need.
Clinical Perspective
The best orthodontic option is not necessarily the newest one. It is the option that gives the most predictable result for your specific case, lifestyle, and treatment goals.

How metal braces actually work

Metal braces work through a carefully controlled biological process. Every bracket, wire adjustment, and appointment is designed to move teeth gradually and safely into their ideal position.
STEP 01
Brackets & Archwire
Each tooth gets a small stainless-steel bracket bonded to its front surface. A thin metal archwire runs through all the brackets, held in place by tiny elastic ties or, in self-ligating designs, built-in clips.
STEP 02
Controlled Force
The archwire is the engine of treatment. It carries a carefully planned tension that applies gentle, continuous pressure to move teeth in specific directions. Every four to six weeks, the wire is adjusted or replaced as treatment progresses.
STEP 03
Bone Remodelling
Teeth move because bone remodels. Pressure causes bone on one side of the tooth to dissolve slightly while new bone forms on the other side, allowing the tooth to gradually shift into position.
Why Treatment Takes Time
This is a biological process. It cannot be rushed without consequences. Twelve to twenty-four months is not an arbitrary timeframe. It is how long your bone takes to do its work safely and predictably.

What to expect over the course of treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is a journey. Understanding what happens at each stage helps you know what to expect and why the process takes time.
Phase 01
Week One
Your teeth will feel sore and your lips and cheeks will need to adjust to the brackets. Salt-water rinses, soft food, and orthodontic wax for any spots that rub help.

Most patients are comfortable by day five.
Phase 02
First Three Months
Visible movement begins, especially for front teeth.

You will return every 4–6 weeks for adjustment. Each adjustment is followed by 2–3 days of mild soreness.

You will get used to it.
Phase 03
Middle Of Treatment
This is the longest phase and involves the careful work of moving roots, closing gaps, and correcting your bite.

Progress appears slower from the outside, but the most important work happens here.

Continue attending every 4–6 week appointment.
Phase 04
Final Phase
Fine adjustments are made to finish the bite and align everything precisely.

Small elastics between upper and lower braces may be used to refine the bite.

Many patients are surprised by how much can still change in the final few months.
Phase 05
Removal
Braces come off in a single appointment.

We then take impressions or digital scans for your retainer, which is fitted within a week.
The Part Most Patients Underestimate
Wearing your retainer as instructed is what keeps the result stable. Orthodontic treatment does not truly end when the braces come off — retention is what makes the result last.

The honest trade-offs

There is no point pretending these are not real:
They Are Visible
Metal brackets are not hidden. If you are in a professional role where appearance matters and you would feel self-conscious for a year or two, this matters to you. If you are not, it doesn't.
Soreness After Adjustments
Two to three days of dull pressure or tenderness every four to six weeks. Manageable with soft food and over-the-counter pain relief. Honest reporting from patients: it is not pleasant, but it is brief.
Food Restrictions
No hard foods (raw apples, hard candies, ice), no sticky foods (toffee, chewing gum), and no nuts straight from the shell. You will adjust your eating habits for the duration of treatment.
Harder Cleaning
Brushing takes longer. You will need to learn to use interdental brushes and floss threaders. If oral hygiene slips during treatment, you can finish with straight teeth but new cavities or gum problems. We coach you on this carefully.
Initial Speech Adjustment
A slight lisp for the first few days as your tongue adjusts. It usually clears within a week.
Honest Perspective
We will not tell you metal braces are pain-free or invisible. We will tell you they work, they finish on time when you follow the protocol, and most patients adjust to them faster than they expected.
If I ranked orthodontic options by how often they are the right answer for a complex case, metal braces would still be near the top. Their reputation has not kept pace with their results.

What your first consultation looks like?

If you are considering metal braces, here is exactly what will happen at your first visit. We follow this sequence with every alignment patient — it is part of how we practise Slow Dentistry.
🗣️

We Start With A Conversation

Before we look at your teeth, we ask what brings you in, what bothers you about your smile or bite, what you have tried before, and any practical concerns about work, school, or daily life. If cost or family experience influenced your decision, we want to understand that too.

📸

We Examine

We take photographs, X-rays, and perform a clinical assessment of your teeth and bite. For more complex cases, we may also take a panoramic X-ray to evaluate the roots and the supporting bone.

📋

We Review The Findings

Once the examination is complete, we sit down again and explain what we found in plain language. We confirm whether metal braces are the right option for your case and explain why.

⚖️

We Discuss Your Options

If another treatment would serve you better, we will tell you. You leave with written costs, treatment timelines, and details of any additional procedures that may be required during treatment.

Part Of Our Slow Dentistry Philosophy

Orthodontic treatment is a significant commitment of time and money. We believe patients make better decisions when they understand their options clearly and have the space to think before committing.

FAQs

Metal braces typically cost ₹25,000–₹45,000 per arch at our clinic. Your final cost depends on case complexity, treatment duration, and whether additional procedures are needed (extractions, retainers, special attachments). We provide a written estimate after assessment, with no hidden additions later.

Mild cases finish in 12–16 months. Moderate cases take 16–20 months. Complex cases can take 20–24 months, occasionally longer. We give you an honest estimate at the start and tell you if it changes during treatment.

There is 2–3 days of soreness after they are first placed and after each monthly adjustment. The discomfort is mild to moderate definitely manageable with soft food and over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients describe it as awareness rather than pain after the first week.

Most foods, yes. The list to avoid: hard foods (raw apples, ice, hard candies, nuts in shell), sticky foods (chewing gum, toffee, caramel), and biting into anything you would normally tear with your front teeth. Cut, slice, and chew with your back teeth. You will adjust your eating habits faster than you expect.

Yes ,  they are not hidden. They are smaller and less obvious than they used to be a generation ago, but they are visibly metal brackets on the front of your teeth. If invisibility is a strong requirement, ceramic, lingual, or clear aligner options exist,  we will discuss them with you honestly.

Not while wearing them.

The technology is simpler and the materials cost less. The cost difference reflects manufacturing and complexity, not the quality of the result. For many cases, metal braces deliver an equal or better clinical outcome than more expensive alternatives.

No. We treat adults with metal braces regularly. There is no upper age limit. Adults often choose metal braces specifically because they are reliable, predictable, and economical  and the visibility matters less to them than they initially expected.

Yes ,  if you wear your retainer as instructed. After active treatment, teeth try to drift back for several months while the bone settles. A retainer holds them in place. We provide and fit your retainer as part of your treatment and explain the wear schedule clearly.

Metal braces remain one of the most effective orthodontic treatments for correcting crowding, spacing, bite issues, and complex tooth movements with precision and reliability.
